I am always checking out social media, specifically “X,” when it comes to finding fantasy football nuggets. Whether it’s an article or a video, I try to devour as much information as I can to help subscribers.
Just the other day, a video of Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs catching a pass in practice made the rounds. Gibbs looked fluid and sharp and showed terrific hands. I then caught notice of tons of “experts” saying that Gibbs should be a top-10 fantasy RB and that he was being undervalued in drafts.
I like Gibbs, maybe more than most experts, as I watched him in college and know the ability he has. But let’s not forget for a moment how much Detroit loves to run in the red zone. With Jamaal Williams now in New Orleans, the Lions have David Montgomery slated to take the early-down/short-yardage role. I can easily see Montgomery scoring eight to 10 TDs in an offense that appears to be on the rise. That isn’t to say that Gibbs won’t catch 40-50 passes and get about nine carries a game, but to think that they are going to give him more than about 14-16 touches as a rookie seems a bit far-fetched.
If Gibbs falls to me in the fourth round of a PPR draft, I am more than willing to take him, especially if I have two or three wide receivers already on my roster. However, I am not forgetting that Montgomery was brought in for a specific reason, and I think his sixth-round fantasy value may prove to be even more pivotal for fantasy managers.
