Doc’s Daily Prescription 7/17: DeAndre Hopkins to the Titans

Doc gives his fantasy football insight on the news of DeAndre Hopkins signing with the Tennessee Titans.

When it was announced on Sunday that the Tennessee Titans were expected to sign WR DeAndre Hopkins to a two-year contract, fantasy football social media acted like it was the death knell for second-year WR Treylon Burks’ value. I would not be too quick to bury Burks just yet.
Let’s assume that Ryan Tannehill averages 34 pass attempts per game. If he completes 67% of his passes (about his career average), that would be around 23 completions per game. Is Hopkins going to catch them all? Of course not! Assuming Hopkins catches eight passes per game, that leaves about 15 for the rest of the team. Is it reasonable to think that Burks catches four passes per game? If he does, we are looking at 68 receptions for the season. If he averages about 14 yards per reception, we are looking at 952 yards. Give him four or five TDs, and we are still looking at one of the better young receivers in the game.
There’s no doubt that fantasy football managers are going to pass on Burks due to Hopkins’ presence. I will buy the dip and take him in Round 9 or 10 instead of Round 6 or 7.  Leave the overreaction to the novices; we are going for fantasy championships!
