2021 Fantasy Football: Week 18 Start 'Em / Sit 'Em

Week 18 Start'Em/Sit'Em Quarterback Start: Ben Roethlisberger , Pittsburgh Steelers - After watching Big Ben play a few times this season, I never thought I would put him in this column, but here we are. To quote the great Paul Rudd, “Look at us.” He’s only eclipsed the 300-yard mark twice this season and hasn’t looked great overall. I have faith this week as he faces a Ravens team that has allowed just over 1100 yards passing and nine passing touchdowns the last three weeks. As long he’s facing a bad secondary and has some weapons, he’s got the potential for a big game. Add in the extra motivation to try to make the playoffs in his final season, and I feel as confident as ever in him heading into Week 18.

Sit: Mac Jones , New England Patriots - The Dolphins defense got rocked in Week 17 as it gave up 34 points to the Titans. They also failed to record a turnover and sacked Ryan Tannehill just one time. Despite that, I still don’t care for the matchup. The Patriots are a run-first offense, and Miami has been one of the better fantasy defenses against the QB all season. This shapes up to be a late-season divisional slugfest that won’t be very high-scoring. Jones will manage the game, but we don’t want game managers in fantasy.

Running Back Start: Jonathan Taylor , Indianapolis Colts - You already know he’s the leading guy each week. But I’m a Colts fan, it’s my last article of the season, and I want to tout my guy even more. Carson Wentz has been bad. The Colts need a win and they are in the playoffs. Taylor will get one of his biggest workloads of the season. He got them here. They will feed JT early and often. Of his 1734 yards, 892 are after contact, over 200 yards more than second-place Nick Chubb . He’s also recorded 104 first downs on the ground. Second place is Najee Harris with 61. Chant it with me! MVP! MVP!

Sit: Cordarrelle Patterson , Atlanta Falcons - It’s been a rough go for Patterson the last three weeks in fantasy. Aside from a rushing touchdown to somewhat salvage a seven-carry 14-yard day against the Lions, he’s been worthless. In Week 18 he faces a Saints team that is one of the best against fantasy running backs. In their first meeting, he was held to ten yards rushing but did tally six receptions for a season-high 126 receiving yards. That won’t happen again. He shouldn’t see your lineup this week.

Wide Receiver Start: Darnell Mooney , Chicago Bears - It’s safe to say Mooney has been one of the breakout fantasy stars of the 2021 season and has easily been the most reliable target in an inconsistent Bears’ passing attack. The Vikings are the only team that has given up over 3,000 yards to wide receivers this season and have allowed the second-most receptions to the position. Mooney should have a solid season finale against a putrid Vikes secondary.

Sit: Marquise Brown , Baltimore Ravens - He’s failed to top 50 yards since Week 13, and Mark Andrews has become the focal point of the passing attack. The Rams have allowed fifth-most receptions to the position on the season, but are near the bottom in fantasy points per game. They have allowed just eight touchdowns to wideouts on the season, which is second-fewest. Andrews remains the only part of this passing game I can start with confidence.

Tight End Start: Noah Fant , Denver Broncos - Kansas City is right in the middle when it comes to fantasy points allowed to the tight end. Fant is coming off a six-catch, 92-yard, one touchdown week. The Denver wideouts have become essentially non starts in fantasy due to their spotty QB play. That benefits Fant. Imagine what these weapons could do with a guy, like, let’s say, Aaron Rodgers . Speaking hypothetically of course. Fant should see a healthy share of targets this week as well.

Sit: Mike Gesicki , Miami Dolphins - He is coming off his first 50-yard effort since Week 11. However, this is New England. In his other meeting against the Patriots this season, Gesicki failed to record a catch on three targets. There won’t be much in the way of passing stats in this one. However, Hunter Henry could be of some use on the other side of this one.

Kicker Start: Michael Badgley , Indianapolis Colts - “Money Bags” is 17 for 21 since joining the Colts, and should get some work this week against a Jags defense with zero reasons to show up. However, Indy has had issues with Jacksonville in recent meetings, so they could have some issues moving the ball. That could mean more field goal attempts for Badgley.

D/ST Start: New Orleans Saints - Coming off allowing just 178 yards to the Panthers, the Saints get a struggling Falcons team averaging 18.3 points per game on the season. The Saints are giving up the fourth-fewest points in the league, and have carried this team. They should finish strong in Week 18.
